Around 10:15 a.m. on Monday, February 1, 2021, the Walton County Sheriff’s Office communications center received 911 call from a Walton County resident who stated that a fire was consuming two campers on Woodlands Boulevard. Walton County Fire Rescue, Argyle Volunteer Fire Department, Liberty Volunteer Fire Department, and Walton County Sheriff’s Office deputies were promptly dispatched to the scene. Walton County Fire Rescue crews were the first to arrive on scene and found smoke and flames coming from two residential campers parked next to each other.

WCSO deputies shut down the roadway while firefighters quickly began to extinguish the flames. WCFR firefighters had the blaze under control in only ten minutes.

Fortunately, the residents made it out of their homes unharmed, but their campers were severely damaged by the flames. So, the American Red Cross was contacted to provide aid to those affected by the fire.

The fire originated in a burn barrel on the porch of one of the campers. Because of heavy wind conditions, the flames quickly spread into the nearby campers.

Fire Chief Tracey Vause would like to remind everyone to avoid burning anything outdoors on unusually windy days as the wind can easily blow sparks into surrounding brush or structures. Never leave a fire unattended, and keep fires a safe distance away from homes, sheds, garages, and other structures.

Fire truck parked in front of a light green home that is on fireWESTVILLE, FL — First responders rush to save a Walton County family’s home after a fire breaks out inside a residence in Westville this morning.

Just before 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 2, 2021, Walton County Fire Rescue, Argyle Volunteer Fire Department, and Walton County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to a home on Otter Pond Road following a 911 call from one of the residents of the home. The homeowner stated that a fire had broken out inside their house, and although he attempted to put it out himself, the fire spread into the roof of the home, and he was unable to contain the flames. Walton County Fire Rescue crews arrived on scene within minutes to find heavy plumes of smoke billowing from the roof of the family’s residence.

With assistance from Argyle Volunteer Fire Department, Walton County Fire Rescue firefighters began extinguishing the flames. Liberty Volunteer Fire Department was later called to the scene to provide additional water supply to the firefighters battling the blaze. After fighting the flames for nearly 45 minutes, firefighters were able to get the fire under control.

Firefighters were able to keep the flames from damaging the master bedroom of the home, and they were able to save some family photos and other personal items, but the majority of the house suffered significant damage from the fire. Fortunately, both residents and the family dog made it out of the home unharmed.

The American Red Cross was contacted to provide aid to the owners of the home. After a quick investigation by the State Fire Marshall’s Office, the cause of the fire was determined to be from ashes from a wood heater being disposed of outside near the porch. The hot ashes caught the porch on fire and quickly spread into the home.

WALTON COUNTY FIRE RESCUE ONE OF FIVE FLORIDA AGENCIES TO PARTICIPATE IN EMS PEDIATRIC STUDY

WALTON COUNTY, Fla— Walton County Fire Rescue is one of five agencies in Florida participating in a new EMS Pediatric Study done by the University of Florida and the National Institutes of Health.

The study was initiated to help researchers understand whether early administration of steroids in a prehospital environment improves outcomes for children with asthma.

Dr. Jennifer Fishe, a Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physician at the University of Florida in Jacksonville, reached out to Walton County Fire Rescue to participate.

“Asthma is the most common chronic childhood disease,” said Dr. Fishe “Asthma causes many EMS runs and emergency room visits and has a tremendous impact on children, their families, and the healthcare system.”

A lot goes on in the airway when it comes to an asthma attack. It can become swollen and inflamed and the muscles around the airways can contract producing extra mucus, causing the breathing (bronchial) tubes to narrow. During an attack, you may cough, wheeze and have trouble breathing.

“What we found in an emergency room setting is the quicker a steroid is given to the patient, the more likely the child is not to be hospitalized,” said Dr. Fishe. “What we’re trying to find out now is if EMS administering steroids to pediatric patients would reduce their length of stay and decrease healthcare costs.”

Five agencies across the state of Florida are participating in the study including Lee County, Leon County, Sarasota County, and Nassau County. Walton County began participating on November 4th.

“Administration of pre-hospital steroids in asthma patients is a common practice in treating adults,” said Assistant Chief Tim Turner of Walton County Fire Rescue. “It’s usually accomplished either through intramuscular or intravenous injections.”

But, when treating children, however, they tend to become more anxious and upset when approached with needles – potentially making their asthma worse.

“This study aims to change that by allowing clinicians to administer an oral steroid to pediatric patients in the field,” said Turner.

The research will be conducted for a total of 18 months, at which time Chief Turner says Walton County Fire Rescue will continue the protocols in place during the study.

“It just makes sense,” said Turner. “Children are our greatest asset, and we feel continuing these changes will greatly impact clinical outcomes in a positive way and take a significant financial burden off their parents.

“We’re here to serve our citizens and we believe this is a great way to do that.”

This study is being funded by the University of Florida Seed Grant and the National Institutes of Health.

February 9, 2021

PRESS RELEASE

State Attorney Ginger Bowden Madden announces that Purnell Untonio Jones plead and was sentenced by the Honorable Kelvin Wells to 15 years in prison for Trafficking in Heroin, Possession of Oxycodone, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, two counts of Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, and Giving a False Name. This 15-year sentence is a minimum-mandatory prison sentence.

The Defendant was arrested as part of a joint investigation between the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and Walton County Sheriff’s Office. As part of this investigation, surveillance was conducted on suspected drug traffickers in Okaloosa and Walton County. That work resulted in Jones being identified as someone involved in the distribution of narcotics and he was detained by Walton County deputies and investigators outside a rented cabin in Miramar Beach on October 9, 2019. When detained, he provided a false name to the officers and was asked to remain outside while a search warrant was obtained for his cabin. During the time the search warrant was being prepared, Jones suddenly stood, kicked his chair into a deputy guarding him, and ran back to his cabin. With deputies and investigators in pursuit, he managed to enter his cabin and tried to slam the door. An investigator was able to get his hand in the way to prevent the door from fully closing, but suffered injuries from having the door slammed on his hand. Together, the officers were able to force Jones away from the door and push it open. Jones grabbed a duffel bag and attempted to flee out the back of the cabin, but was captured and arrested before he could escape. A search warrant was subsequently obtained for the cabin and approximately 868 grams of Heroin, five Oxycodone pills, and drug paraphernalia including a digital scale was found inside.

The investigation and arrest was conducted by the Walton County Sheriff’s Office and Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant State Attorney Matthew Richardson prosecuted the case. Mr. Richardson and the officers of the Walton County Sheriff’s Office were pleased with this sentence and that these dangerous narcotics were taken off the streets. For further information, please contact him at 850-892-8080.

WALTON COUNTY, Fla— A former Atlanta-based attorney is facing felony charges of fraud after redirecting funds to his personal bank account from a title company he used to own.

On May 20, 2019, the Walton County Sheriff’s Office was called to investigate a theft in which a manager of a title company out of Miramar Beach noticed funds missing from one of its accounts.

On May 15, 2019, the victim noticed approximately $22,000 missing from the company’s escrow account. The company handles real estate closings and the escrow account was earnest money for buyers who were scheduled to close on a property along County Highway 30a within the next 30-45 days.

May 18, 2019, the complainant noticed a $72,920.58 payoff had been wired to the former owner of the company, Matthew Dickason, 45, of Atlanta Georgia. The victim explained Dickason was no longer the owner of the company and was currently the Managing Partner for Dickason Law Group based out of Atlanta, Georgia.

The investigation that followed revealed Matthew A. Dickason, abused his position as an attorney admitted to the Georgia state bar and the managing partner of a real estate law firm in order to fraudulently redirect a wire transfer for $72,920.58. The $72,920.58 was in the possession of a title company in Miramar Beach and money from property owners for a property in Santa Rosa Beach intended to pay off a mortgage.

Instead, Dickason redirected the funds in access of $70,000 to his own bank account, on April 22, 2019.

This bank account only had an average balance of approximately $228.13 for the preceding six months. The $72,920.58 was transferred into Dickason’s bank account with numerous other wire transfers for a total of approximately $6,508,840.27.

The number of transactions and the amount on the transactions were not routine for this account as evidenced by documents and statements provided by Dickason’s bank.

A warrant for Dickason was submitted in September of 2019 for grand theft. On April 6, 2020, Dickason was disbarred by the Supreme Court of Georgia.

On February 2nd, 2021 DeKalb County Police Department received a tip from Crime Stoppers regarding Dickason’s location on Echo Trail in Atlanta, Georgia. Officers waited for any movement from the home when Dickason emerged from the residence with a dog. Officers approached and confirmed his identity.

Dickason was placed into custody and transported to the DeKalb County Jail. He was transported and booked into the Walton County Jail on February 10th. His bond was set at $15,000 and he was released the following day.

WALTON COUNTY, Fla—Carjacking victim’s plea for their child’s life at gunpoint, and now, two men are behind bars facing felony charges from multiple counties.

On February 12th a man finished pumping gas in his truck at the Loves Travel Stop in Mossy Head when a suspect put his arm between the doors and shoved a black pistol in his side. His wife, in the passenger seat of the truck, was startled by a second suspect beating on the door and opened it unknowing who it was.

Ladarious Frye, 18, and Quandrareck Jackson, 22, both armed, then threatened to kill the victims if they didn’t get out of the vehicle. Husband and wife then pled for the suspects to let them remove their sleeping 10-year-old daughter from the backseat.

Jackson held a gun to the victim’s head as she removed her daughter from the truck.

The victims were able to thoroughly describe both suspects in great detail and direction of travel.

The stolen truck was located on Interstate 10 by the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office where a vehicle pursuit ensued. At the Santa Rosa County line, spike strips were deployed which deflated the front passenger tire. Okaloosa County Sheriff deputies observed the two suspects running west from the stolen vehicle.

Later, a Santa Rosa County Sheriff deputy apprehended both suspects after responding to a call for two suspicious people coming out of the wooded area around Kesha Taylor Drive in Milton.

Both men appeared to have been traveling through the woods for some time and had sticks and debris on them. During a search, both Jackson and Frye were found in possession of weapons.

Frye and Jackson are charged with carjacking with a firearm, display a firearm during the commission of a felony, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. They are awaiting extradition to Walton County.

On March 6, 2021, while securing the scene of another crash a Walton County Sheriff’s Deputy was stopped at an intersection with emergency lights activated and traffic cones placed in the roadway. John Reinlie, 33, of Freeport was driving his black Nissan Frontier northbound on U.S. Highway 331 and drove through the traffic cones and collided with the deputy’s front brush guard of his vehicle. The deputy, who saw the truck coming towards him, attempted to exit the vehicle and was in the doorway when Rienlie struck his vehicle.

Reinlie continued driving after striking the deputy’s vehicle and was subsequently pulled over after nearly making it to the scene of the initial. When questioned by deputies he said he “fell asleep” and “thought he hit a cone”.

Upon further investigation, it was determined Reinlie was driving while under the influence and he was charged accordingly. The deputy was treated for his injuries.

Reinlie was given a $1,000 bond and posted the bond the following day on March 7th.

WALTON COUNTY, Fla— Walton County Sheriff’s Office is looking for those seeking sponsorships to attend the law enforcement academy to pursue a career in public safety.

WCSO is continuing its initiative to provide access to law enforcement training to those wishing to serve the Walton County community.

Starting in August of this year, WCSO, in collaboration with Northwest Florida State College, will be offering sponsorships to individuals looking for a career in law enforcement.

The full-time, six-month academy will take place four days a week and will be instructed by members of NWFSC as well as local law enforcement agencies. Courses will be held at the Niceville or DeFuniak Springs campuses and will utilize training facilities at the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.

“The benefit to being able to provide an academy with a partnership with Northwest Florida State College is these men and women will experience our culture and atmosphere from the start,” said Sheriff Michael Adkinson. “The hope is that the members will have a greater understanding of our mission and values as an agency.”

WCSO’S partnership with NWFSC extends beyond law enforcement as it moves to facilitate courses for all first responders.

“The facilities at the Sheriff’s Office such as a driving pad, fire tower, and firing range are just a few ways to provide the critical training areas, taking the partnership and training to the next level,” said Adkinson. “The availability of these new courses would not be possible without funding from the Triumph Grant and NWFSC.”
